The first evidence of the Historical Regatta is in the thirteenth century but it is probably much older since the city of Venice has always been projected on the sea.It takes place every year on the first Sunday of September.
The event recalls the welcome to Caterina Cornaro, wife of the King of Cyprus, who renounced the throne in favor of Venice.During the Historical Regatta, in the Grand Canal parade typical sixteenth-century boats with figures in typical costumes in memory of the glorious past of the Republic.
After the parade begins the Regattas, a series of races in different types of rowing boats.
The complete program includes the blessing of the gondolini in Campo della Salute on Thursday and the presentation of the crews, preceded by a water parade in the Grand Canal starting from the Herbarium in Rialto.
Sunday 3 September the afternoon begins with the parade along the Grand Canal of historic boats with costumed figures, gondolas and boats rowing associations rowing the Venetian.Followed by the actual races:- Regata de le Maciarele e de le Schie: regatta on mascarete with two oars reserved for boys.
