Carampane District and the Bridge of the Tits

The Carampane District is located in San Polo and the bridge that connects the San Polo district to Santa Croce is known as "Ponte delle Tette" in English Bridge of the tits... Yes you read right, I just wrote tits and today I’ll write about the Red Light District of Venice.

At the death of the last descendant of the Rampani family (around 1319), the real estate became the property of the Serenissima Republic. The government, exasperated by the presence of prostitutes at any time of the day, decided to allocate the buildings to use as closed houses and thus regulate the situation out of hand. How did it work?It may seem strange to you but the prostitutes looked out at the windows (probably on the first floor) showing off their merchandise to those who passed along the river by boat or on the bridge. The government issued strict rules about how prostitutes should behave. They could not leave the neighborhood where they lived and worked; every evening, at the sound of the third bell, they had to return to their homes otherwise they would be punished with 10 lashes.Attending taverns and working during holy holidays was forbidden. They were only allowed to go to the city centre on Saturday, provided they wore a sign of recognition, usually yellow.Around 500 the Serenissima encouraged the profession of prostitutes because of the increase in homosexuality that could cause an image damage for a powerful city like Venice. The district today is a quiet area and populated by Venetians. If you pass by I recommend you to try the restaurant "Le Antiche Carampane", really good and above all typical!I contenuti presenti sul blog "50ShadesOfVenice" dei quali è autore il proprietario del blog non possono essere copiati, riprodotti, pubblicati o redistribuiti perché appartenenti all'autore stesso.E’ vietata la copia e la riproduzione dei contenuti in qualsiasi modo o forma.E’ vietata la pubblicazione e la redistribuzione dei contenuti non autorizzata espressamente dall’autore.Copyright © 2010 - 2021 #50shadesofvenice by Antica Locanda Sturion Residenza d'Epoca.
